Meet the Presenters of
Engineering Education: Power Systems Series

Michael F. Ahern P.E. is the Director of Power Systems at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI). He is responsible for developing energy related graduate education programs delivered through WPI’s Corporate and Professional Education department. Mike began his career in 1978, at the Pratt & Whitney division of UTC. He joined Northeast Utilities (NU) in 1981, and rose through a series of increasingly responsible positions at the Millstone nuclear power plant. He then served as NU’s Director of electric Distribution Engineering. He led NU’s Transmission Operations and Planning in 2004, and was promoted to vice president in 2005. In this role, he was responsible for a variety of functions, including engineering and training.  Following his retirement from NU in 2012, Ahern joined WPI in his current capacity. (Webinar Title: US Energy Policy: Trends and Results)

  Dr. Edvina Uzunovic has over 15 years of experience with a range of    responsibilities in the power systems industry. She has been a vital  contributor to the  overall success of several leading power industry  organizations while serving different  roles as a Technical Officer, Smart Grid  Transmission Applications, Senior  Quantitative Analyst and Senior  Research and Technology Development Engineer.She is currently the  Associate Director of Power Systems Engineering and an adjunct professor at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. During the course of her career, Edvina has made numerous contributions  to the  body of knowledge in power systems, which have been shared in  many technical publications. She has received a number of awards for her  work in power systems, specifically for her work on FACTS. She is also active in her volunteer work with the IEEE Power and Energy Society,  currently serving as IEEE PES Region 1 Representative. (Webinar Title: HVDC and FACTS Devices: Future of Power Systems).

Will O’Brien, MBA, JD, has over 40 years in business, the information technology industry, and consulting. He is committed to developing current and future business leaders to become environmental stewards (i.e. reducing carbon emissions, energy consumption and operating costs). As an accomplished business executive, professor, and change agent, Will understands the strategic importance of energy management to minimize operating costs for corporate profitability and competitiveness.
